KONG Puppy Small
The KONG Puppy is one of the most trusted first toys a new puppy owner can buy — and for good reason. Made from KONG’s softest natural rubber formula, specifically developed for a puppy’s 28 baby teeth and tender gums, it gives young dogs something appropriate to chew on while also serving as a fetch toy, enrichment puzzle, and crate training aid all in one.
The hollow centre stuffs easily with kibble, wet food, or puppy-safe treats. Freeze it and it becomes a longer-lasting puzzle that’s particularly useful during teething. The classic KONG shape produces an erratic, unpredictable bounce that keeps puppies engaged during play — and keeps owners entertained watching them work it out.
The Small is sized for puppies weighing up to 9kg. Available in pink or blue — colour subject to availability.
Best for:
Puppies in the teething stage who need an appropriate outlet for chewing; new puppy owners looking for a reliable crate training aid; and anyone wanting a single toy that covers play, enrichment, and behaviour support in one. Particularly good for small breeds and puppies up to around 9 months of age.
The Hound Hut Expert View:
The KONG Puppy is one of the few puppy products we’d recommend without hesitation to almost every new puppy owner, regardless of breed. The softer rubber formula makes a real difference at this stage — it’s yielding enough to be safe on baby teeth without being so soft that it falls apart under determined chewing. Stuffing and freezing it with wet puppy food or soaked kibble is one of the simplest and most effective ways to extend crate settling time, and it’s a technique that holds up well throughout the early months. Once your puppy gets their adult teeth (usually around 9 months), transition to a KONG Classic or KONG Extreme depending on their chewing strength — don’t try to extend the life of the Puppy version beyond that point.

- Crate Training Aid – A stuffed KONG is one of the most effective tools for encouraging calm crate settling in young puppies
- Dishwasher Safe – Top-rack dishwasher safe for thorough cleaning without effort
- Supports Appropriate Chewing Habits – Gives puppies a safe, sanctioned outlet for their chewing instinct, reducing destructive behaviour

FAQs:
What size puppy is the Small suitable for? The Small is recommended for puppies weighing up to 9kg (20lbs). If your puppy is at the top of this range or is a particularly enthusiastic chewer, consider sizing up.
How is the Puppy rubber different from the KONG Classic? The Puppy line uses a softer, more flexible rubber formula designed to be gentle on baby teeth and sore gums. The Classic uses a firmer red rubber intended for adult dogs. Once your puppy’s adult teeth come in — typically around 9 months — switch to the Classic or Extreme depending on their chewing strength.
Can I freeze food inside it? Yes, and we’d recommend it. Stuffing with wet puppy food, soaked kibble, or plain yoghurt and freezing for a few hours creates a longer-lasting puzzle that’s especially effective for teething discomfort and crate settling.
What colour will I receive? The KONG Puppy Small comes in pastel pink and blue. Colour availability may vary — if you have a preference, please contact us before ordering and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
When should I move my puppy to an adult KONG? Once adult teeth are through (usually around 9 months) or when your puppy outgrows the weight recommendation, transition to the KONG Classic (red) or KONG Extreme (black) depending on how strong a chewer they are.
Is it dishwasher safe? Yes — top rack only. Alternatively, rinse with warm soapy water and allow to dry fully before refilling.
